For a process engineering plant for the production of hydrochloric acid, SGL Carbon GmbH required a waste heat boiler for process cooling. The challenge was meeting specific requirements for the vertical design, earthquake resistance, and possible operation with a process-side overpressure of up to 2 bar.

  • A waste heat boiler is required for process cooling in a chemical plant for hydrochloric acid production.
  • Due to specific requirements, the boiler must feature a compact vertical design, be earthquake-resistant, and be suitable for operation with a process-side overpressure of up to 2 bar.

A radiation-heated waste heat boiler of type HPB-AHK (SB) 1400/10 was developed and supplied. This was designed as a special water tube boiler with a membrane wall and a separate steam drum in natural circulation – ideal for use under the extreme conditions mentioned.
